THE HEALTH OF CAUCSIAN OVCHARKA.
CAUCASIAN OVCHARKA is a very healthy breed that noone
has managed to destroy yet. The breed is build so perfect, as
almost no Caucasian Ovcharka get any pain even if they have been radiated
C,D or even E of dysplasia either on the hips or on the elbows.
What is important to remember, is that Norway is one of
the most strict countries in the world regarding having a free
diagnosis on the hips and the elbows.
Some of my C.O. were guarding 100 cows last summer on a very big
place, 300000 square meters. They were running a lot inside the
fence to protect the cows, and they never had any pain, neither
in the hips nor in the elbows.
One of the LGD that was working with protecting the cows
on this big area, Natasha, has been radiated free on her hips,
A, and has D on her elbows. The other one, Goliat was radiated C
on his hips and D on his elbows. An other one, Vala has been
radiated C on her hips and has not been radiated on her elbows,
and an other one, Marve, hasn't been radiated yet. The last one,
Grom-Grom has also not been radiated yet.
So dysplasia on their hips and elbows usually don't make them
any pain. But if a C.O. get pain that seems to come from the
hips or from the elbows, we have to remember that a dog has more
than hips and elbows.
Dysplasia comes when the hips or the elbows haven't developped
perfectly. And which degree they get, depends of how bad the
hips or elbows have developped.
Dysplasia is not counted as a disease if the dog is clinical
healthy. It becomes a disease only if the dog get pain because
of the dysplasia.
Dysplasia is genecital, but it is only 20-50 % hereditary,
that's what the experts says. The rest 50-80 % depends of the
feeding and the environmental when the pup is growing. Natural
feeding from animal products is the best food to make the pup
grow perfectly. Correct vitamins is of course also very
important.
As on every other big breeds, some of them may get enostose.
That is pain in the dog's legs that some of them get when they
are growing. This will usually dissapear when they have finished
their growing. We usually call it growing pain.
On most breeds there will come eye disease now and then, Luckily
we almost have no eye disease on Caucasian Ovcharka.
Different types of Chataract may appear, and also
Micriftalmus. But these eye diseases are vey rare on this breed.
Chataract may make the dog blind or at least that the dog loose
50% of the sight.
Unfortunately there are two dogs of this rare and
wonderfull breed that have been eye screened and got bad eye
diagnosis.
One of them, that has been imported from Russia, has
the eye sickness, Microftalmus. She has two litters here in
Norway. One of her sons got different
eye diagnosis every time he was screened on his eyes. First
he got the diagnossis free on his eyes, when he was a very
small pup. Then at the age of 7,5 months, he got the
diagnosis chataract, and his last diagnosis is
RD-Multifokal. Unfortunately he was used for mating after
the owner had screened his eyes and knew that this male has
serious eye disease.
I am happy to tell you that those eye diseases do
not come from my bloodlines.
In some bloodlines there is heart trouble, but it's not
common. If a breeder get heart trouble in his og her bloodlines,
it's very important to continue the breeding with dogs that the
breeder is sure that have no heart disease. Inbreeding of dogs
with heart trouble should never be done. Heart trouble is a very
serious disease, but eye disease that makes the dog blind or
weak sighted, is of course a really extremely serious disease.
Because a small and new breeder of Caucasian Ovcharka
here in Norway has written some wrong informations about a dog
that died of heart trouble, I feel that I have to correct this.
This other breeder writes that Shabo iz Svetlogo Doma
from Russia did not die of heart trouble, but that he was killed
by other C.O. That is for sure wrong information. I have inside
information about this. He died of heart trouble. And he was so
strong and very big, so no other dogs would even think about
trying to kill him, and they would never succeed either with
killing him. So it was his heart that killed him, unfortunately.
It's of course very important to avoid inbreeding and close
linebreeding of his bloodlines, as we that are serious breeders
of this rare breed, do not want heart trouble in our bloodlines.
One of his great grand daugthers also died of heart trouble as
young dog. I know this, because I owned her. She had Shabo iz
Svetlogo Doma as great grandfather on both her mother's and
father's side in the pedigree.
I knew Shabo iz Svetlogo Doma very well, as he lived in
my home for about one year. So he spent a lot time of his short
life in my home.
Your Caucasian Ovcharka, that you have bought from my
breeding, will probably never get any serious diseases.
As far as I know, no other diseases has apparead on any
Caucasian Ovcharka.
